So many memories come flooding back—
the cherry blossoms.

Leading LEE
Director, Writer, and Photographer

Twenty years ago, following the death of his father, Leading LEE set out on a motorcycle journey around Taiwan with his close friend, Gino Hsu.

He wanted to return to Taroko, where he had taken his first childhood trip with his father, in search of the bowl of daylily soup preserved in his memory. He also wanted to revisit Orchid Island—and rediscover the person he had once been, wearing a traditional loincloth and swimming alongside flying fish.

That journey, born from loss, later became the illustrated book Anywhere, Somewhere, Nowhere—Passage to food, which received seven publishing awards that year and was subsequently adapted into the feature film Anywhere, Somewhere, Nowhere.

For the next twenty years, Leading LEE continued to create across literature, cinema, and visual storytelling.

He is a two-time recipient of the international Promax Gold Award for channel marketing. His television directorial debut, Somewhere over the sky, received the Golden Bell Award for Best Television Series, while his film Burring Caw was nominated for Best Narrative Feature at the 20th Taipei Film Awards. In 2020, he was invited to create The Time of Huan-Nan, a rare creative undertaking in Taiwan’s public art landscape that brought a feature-length narrative film into public space. His literary work Flavours Across Time has also remained part of Taiwan’s elementary-school Mandarin curriculum for the past decade.

Whether working through writing, cinema, or photography, Leading LEE has always returned to the same question:

How do people meet, experience loss,

and continue moving forward through time?

Since 2025, Leading LEE has collaborated with Canon Taiwan on photographic projects. In 2026, works from his series 24 Hours in Taipei were exhibited across three venues. Following his established identities as a director and writer, he now formally steps forward as a photographer, revealing another creative journey that has been unfolding for twenty years.

Invited by Kieri Gallery, Leading LEE presents his first solo photography exhibition, A Moment in Becoming, featuring forty works created across Taiwan, Kyoto, and Chicago.

These photographs carry forward the narrative sensibility of his literature and films while preserving the element of chance unique to photography—

a person steps into the light, a city reveals an expression, and strangers briefly cross paths.

An ordinary scene suddenly becomes a moment that can never happen again.

Through these forty works, Leading LEE reflects upon people, cities, relationships, and the gains and losses we encounter in life.

Within his photographs, nothing is ever a finished conclusion.

Everything before our eyes is only a temporary state, formed by all the causes and conditions that came before. A second later, it will already have begun to change.

It is a moment coming into being, even as it begins to disappear.

And there, waiting at the scene as life unfolds, Leading LEE preserves for us the power of that moment.

Kieri Gallery invites you to enter A Moment in Becoming

because every moment

is both the outcome of all that came before

and the beginning of everything yet to change.
